As per the Times of India, Delhi edition, dated Jan 30, 2010: ‘Cervical Cancer claims almost half a million women worldwide. In 99.7% of all affected women, it results from a history of persistent infection by a family of more than 100-related viruses called human papilloma virus (HPV). As many as 80% of all sexually-active women have a risk of infection”.

According to genie-oncologist, Konica Gupta, “Some types of HPV are referred to as low-risk as they rarely cause cancer. Types that are more likely to lead to cancer are referred to as high-risk, oncogenic or carcinogenic. Both can cause the growth of abnormal cells, but only the high-risk ones lead to cancer. However, it is estimated that women who have a long-lasting infection with high-risk HPV are 200-plus times more likely to develop pre-cancerous cervical disease than those without it.”
